The spring election picture for area school and municipal boards came into focus Tuesday with the passing of the filing deadline. In Bangor, though, that deadline has been extended.
The race for election to the Bangor Village Board is without a doubt the most crowded in the area as at least four new faces will appear on the ballot — and it could get more crowded before the week is through.
Incumbent Eric Vaughn did not file to run for re-election by Tuesday’s 5 p.m. deadline. He also did not file noncandidacy papers by the Dec. 21 deadline. That means the new deadline for anyone else wishing to run for the board is extended 72 hours (until 5 p.m. Jan. 8).
Kimberly Shrake, the other Bangor Village Board member up for re-election also will not be on the ballot this spring. In fact, she will leave the board even before her term expires in April. She turned in her resignation last Monday.
That leaves Bangor Trustee Kristy O’Heron as the only one of the three incumbents running for re-election.
Challengers for the three at-large seats up for Bangor Village Board election include Kevin Hilby, Eric Faas, Jeff Radke and Dan Hesse (who resigned from the board a year ago).
Things are not quite so crowded in the races for spots on the West Salem Village Board. Incumbents Diana Engel and Jim Leicht will be running again, as will newcomer Scott Schumacher (who ran unsuccessfully for the board last year). J. Terry Hanson, the other incumbent whose term expired this spring announced his intentions not to run again in late December.
The West Salem School Board had three members with terms set to expire in April — Ann Bina, Henry Althoff and Scott Scafe. Bina and Althoff won’t be in the picture as they filed noncandidacy papers. Joining Scafe on the ballot will be newcomers Thomas Helgeson and Rita Zindorf.
Bangor School Board members Rod Hundt, Dave Vetrano and Paul Wuensch all are running for re-election and no challengers filed to run against them.
All county supervisors are up for re-election this spring. There will be a primary in District 23 as incumbent Tammy Gamroth of Bangor will face off against Mark Meston of Rockland and Brian Kapanke of Bangor.
In District 21 Dennis Manthei will be running unopposed. Also unopposed are Ray Ebert in District 22, Leon Pfaff in District 24 and Tina Wehrs in District 34.
Rockland Village Board candidates will be determined by a caucus to be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Rockland Village Hall. Board members Ole Mathison, Ken Lucas and Ray Schultz all have terms expiring in April.
