At its regular December meeting, the Farmington Town Board voted to retain Vantage Architects of La Crosse for design services for the Mindoro Commu-nity Center and Library project. Vantage was picked from a field of nine firms submitting proposals.
After reviewing all the proposals and conducting interviews of the top three candidates, a special committee that met twice prior to the December board meeting made the recommendation.
The project will include an entrance drive and parking lot, low maintenance building exterior with lighting, delivery facilities, entrance foyer with handicap entrance, display space, signage, a comfortable library space with 12,000 to 15,000 book shelving capacity, conference room, history room and community room. Also included will be all plumbing, HVAC, electrical, data and communication requirements.
The town has been notified that the community center and library project qualifies for 15 percent funding through a Rural Development Grant. The board also learned that more than 100 responses have been received to its recent survey, which might qualify the town for funds from a community development block grant.
In other business, the board appointed the following election inspectors for 2010-11: Kay Timm, Artis Aasen, Colleen Hoeth, Shirley Hesse, Gloria Beaser, Joan Dolbier, Betty Kirchner, Marty Stetzer, Phyllis Timm, Myrna Olson and Leona Moore.
The board approved the purchase of a set of carbide-impregnated rubber snowplow blades. Monroe County has been testing these blades and according to results so far they have a wear factor of 50 percent more than the carbide blades currently being used. They transfer less vibration, reducing operator fatigue and equipment wear and also tend to follow slight irregularities in the road surface.
The board was informed that the annual road certification and biannual PASER rating has been completed. Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) is a system for rating the surface condition of roads. Both are required in order to qualify for state aids.
The next meeting of the Farmington Town Board is slated for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Farmington Town Hall in Mindoro.
