A number of candidates have filed election papers in recent weeks, and there is still time for others to run for school board and village board positions in West Salem and Bangor.
While Diana Engel and Jim Leicht have filed for re-election to the West Salem Village Board, they are the only incumbents thus far who have formally confirmed their candidacy, according to Village Administrator Teresa Schnitzler.
J. Terry Hanson, the other incumbent up for re-election this spring, filed noncandidacy papers Monday, while Scott Schumacher, who unsuccessfully ran for the board last spring has taken out papers but had not yet returned them.
Prospective candidates have until Jan. 6 to turn in their paperwork and formally enter the race.
The Bangor Village Board is guaranteed to have some new faces by next spring as Kimberly Shrake has indicated she will not run for re-election and the death of Village President Rob Gjertsen will open another spot on the board.
The terms of two sitting trustees — Eric Vaughn and Kristy O’Heron — are set to end this spring.
So far, O’Heron is the only incumbent to have taken out papers. According to Village Clerk Shelly Miller, two other newcomers — Kevin Hilby and Jeff Radke — have taken out papers. In addition Dan Hesse, who resigned from the board last January, has taken out papers.
The Bangor School Board has three incumbents — President Rod Hundt, Vice President Dave Vetrano and Director Paul Wuensch — up for re-election this spring. As of Monday, Hundt and Wuensch had filed papers.
At press time, the West Salem School District was a little short of candidates. Incumbents Ann Bina and Henry Althoff have already filed noncandidacy papers. Bina was the school board clerk and Althoff was a director.
Meanwhile, the other incumbent whose term is expiring this spring — Treasurer Scott Scafe — is the only individual thus far to have filed election papers with the district.
