Potential candidates seem to be in no rush to file for next spring’s municipal and school board elections.
In fact, in the West Salem School District there have been more people opting out than putting their hats in the ring.
Noncandidacy papers have been filed by Ann Bina and Henry Althoff, said Patrick Bahr, administrative assistant to the superintendent, “but no one has actually filed for candidacy yet.” Bina and Althoff would have been up for re-election along with Scott Scafe.
The Bangor School District has seen a similar lack of early filings. “No one has filed papers yet,” said Superintendent Roger Foegen, “but that’s kind of normal. People tend to wait until the last week.”
Bangor School Board President Rod Hundt, Treasurer Dave Vetrano and Trustee Paul Wuensch’s current terms all end this spring. None of the three had filed papers, and no opponents had come forward.
Three candidates have announced their intent to run for West Salem Village Board. Diana Engel, who earlier said she would not run for re-election, had a change of heart and is now running. The other two announced candidates are Scott Schumacher and incumbent James Leicht.
Another incumbent, J. Terry Hanson, is also up for re-election but has not yet announced his intentions.
The Bangor Village Board has three candidates up for re-election — Eric Vaughn, Kristy O’Heron and Kimberly Shrake. Thus far, only challenger Jeff Radke has taken out papers (although former Trustee Dan Hesse indicated at last week’s board meeting that he would be interested in returning to the board).
Further complicating the election picture for the Bangor Village Board is the likelihood that another trustee spot will open up when one of the board members takes over the village president slot made vacant by Rob Gjertsen’s death last month.
There will be no elections or caucuses this year in the towns of Barre, Burns, Farmington and Hamilton since all four municipalities elect officials on a two-year cycle, with this year being an off year.
Rockland plans a caucus in January as Ole Mathison, Ken Lucas and Ray Schulz have terms that expire in April.
All La Crosse County Board members are up for re-election in the spring.
