Guy R. Jewett
WEST SALEM — Guy Raymond Jewett of West Salem passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2009, at the age of 101, at Lakeview Health Center, West Salem.
He was born Oct. 28, 1907, the fourth of 11 children on a farm in the town of Burns, to Harry and Grace (Atwater) Jewett. Guy graduated from Sparta High School in 1925 and began a career in the dairy industry milking test cows, before becoming a herdsman for the state of Wisconsin.
On Aug. 7, 1933, he married Mabel Freese in Rockford, Ill., and she preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 2000, after over 67 years of marriage.
Returning to the West Salem area in 1936, he managed farms for a doctor until buying his own place in McKinley Valley, where he lived for over 50 years.
Guy was active on local school boards, a 4-H Leader for many years and participated in numerous agriculture business organizations.
An excellent musician, he enjoyed performing with his accordian or harmonica at any event or by personal request. After many years of farming, Guy discovered that repairing antique clocks and building unique furniture was more satisfying than milking cows, so he sold his herd and started a new vocation.
He will be remembered by all he met for his strong convictions, many talents, and the happiness he found in his new work. When his eyesight began to fail, he had to give up his craftmanship tasks and then moved to West Salem.
