George J. Hurtz

MIDDLE RIDGE — George J. Hurtz, 101, of Middle Ridge passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009.

He was born March 1, 1908, in Nebraska to Jacob and Mary (Schmidt) Hurtz. George moved from Nebraska to Middle Ridge at the age of 9. He was a lifelong resident of Middle Ridge. He was united in marriage to Regina Weber on Oct. 4, 1932, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Middle Ridge. George was a dairy farmer all of his life. He also hauled milk and worked in woodworking. He loved being with his family and especially family get-togethers. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing cards and going to dances in Cashton. He was also proud to be a cancer survivor since 1987.

He is survived by two sons, Cletus (Marilyn) Hurtz of Cashton and Quentin (Gloria) Hurtz of Boscobel, Wis.; four daughters, Donna (Paul) Leis of Cashton, Eunice (Richard) Reget of Coon Valley, Carol Riley of Boscobel and Sonya (Pat) Goerg of De Forest, Wis.; 22 grandchildren, Rodney Leis, Diane Schwarz, Dennis Leis, Steven Leis, Michelle Brown, Gregory Leis, Laurel Gotz, Bridget Mlsna, Thomas Leis, Kelly Leis, Christine Roberts, Karen Reget, Jeffrey Reget, Daniel Reget, Mark Reget, Patrick Reget, Robert Hurtz, Allen Hurtz, Ronald Hurtz, Todd Hurtz, Tammy Lemke and Tim Goerg; 52 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Amanda Whitehead of Red Wing, Minn., and Johanna Frederick of La Crosse; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Hurtz of Bangor and Marie Hurtz of Cashton; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Regina; his parents, Jacob and Mary; one daughter, Laureta; two brothers, Peter and James Hurtz; one sister, Regina Schomburg; three brothers-in-law, Leo Whitehead, Willis Schomburg and Lawrence Frederick; and four greatgreat-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Middle Ridge. Father Francis Abuah-Quansah and Monsignor Robert Hundt will concelebrate. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for visitation Friday, June 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Middle Ridge, with a rosary to conclude visitation. Family and friends are also invited for visitation Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Torkelson Funeral Home in Cashton is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be given to Franciscan Skemp Cancer Center or St. Peter’s Catholic Church in memory of George.

Agnes Elizabeth Munson

LA CROSSE -- Agnes Elizabeth Munson, 94, of La Crosse, formerly of Hendricks, Minn., passed away peacefully Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse.

She was born Oct. 9, 1914, in Marshall, Minn., to Martin and Rasmine (Rasmussen) Miller. Agnes was confirmed at Marble Lutheran Church in Hendricks. Her passion in life was her family.

Survivors include five children, Carl (Judith) Munson of West Salem, Helen Jess of La Crosse, Cheryl Hughes of Evanston, Ill., and Karen (Rick) Gawthorpe and Donnie Munson, both of La Crosse; nine grandchildren, Stephen (Catherine) Jess of Bloomingdale, Ill., Kristin (Jeffrey) Seely of Georgetown, Texas, Kurt (Laurie) Jess of Bloomington, Minn., Dr. Erik (Dr. Kimber) Munson of Waukesha, Wis., Kris (Heidi) Munson of Muskego, Wis., Gary (Jeanie) Kennedy Jr. of La Crosse, Nicole Berg of Galesville and Michelle Munson and Jennifer Munson, both of Madison; 14 great-grandchildren, Alycia Furan, Jessika Seely, Kyla Seely and Hannah Seely, all of Georgetown, Texas, Kephren Jess of Bloomington, Minn., Brandi Turner, Jacob Berg, Summer Berg and Alexis Schroeder, all of Galesville, Wyatt Kennedy of La Crosse, Matthew and Sophie Munson of Waukesha, and Lance and Lauren Munson of Muskego; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; her grandson, Andrew Lars Munson; two brothers, Carl and Peter Miller; two sisters, Caroline Nicholas and Annie Schutte; and a son-in-law, Charles Hughes.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the Chapel at Oak Grove Cemetery, 1407 La Crosse St., La Crosse. Chaplain Rachel Cobb will officiate. Entombment will be in the Gardens of Peace Mausoleum at Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel Friday from 1 p.m. until time of services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse, or to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation.

Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Hillview for the compassionate care given to Agnes.
