Betty Ann Schmidt

WEST SALEM — Betty Ann Schmidt, 70, of West Salem died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.

She was born in La Farge on April 1, 1939. Betty married Peter N. Schmidt on June 6, 1959, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She had farmed for many years and had worked at Villa St. Joseph. Betty was a member of 4-H and loved fishing.

She is survived by five children, Rose Lemke of West Salem, Mary (Allan) Bergmann of St. Joseph Ridge, Kevin (Nancy) Schmidt of West Salem, Kenneth (Kimberly) Schmidt of West Salem and Thomas (Heidi) Schmidt of Onalaska; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her mother, Alice; a sister, Helen Safford of St. Germaine, Wis.; and two brothers, Kenneth Widner of Beloit, Wis., and La Verne Widner of Crowley, La.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her father; her stepfather, Albert Widner; a grandson; and a granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph Ridge. The Rev. Francis Abuah Quansah will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. A rosary will be recited Friday at 6 p.m. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Robert ‘Bob’ O. Maas

STODDARD, Wis. —Robert “Bob” O. Maas, 81, of Stoddard died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse.

He was born the only child to Harry and Virginia (Risch) Maas in Milwaukee on March 15, 1928. Robert grew up in West Milwaukee and was employed by Wisconsin Electric Power Co. for 42 years. On June 5, 1948, he married Adeline F. Illemann in Milwaukee. He lived most of his life in Menomonee Falls, Wis., and served as the last volunteer fire chief for the village. Robert enjoyed serving and protecting his community.

Robert was an avid outdoorsman who liked hunting with his buddies, Bob, Frank and Louie. He was a loving husband who enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and wife of 61 years. They traveled many years together with Bob and Ruth Kimball. Robert and Adeline had many lifelong friends that were so very special to both of them.

In addition to his beloved wife, Adeline, Robert is survived by four children, Clifford (Edna) Maas of Bangor, Barbara (Craig) Sedlmayr of Stoddard, Jeff (Jane) Maas of La Crescent, Minn., and Timothy (Jenny) Maas of Menomonee Falls. Robert was a very proud grandpa of eight grandchildren, Kimberlee (Greg) Ashwell, Jeremy (Theresa) Maas, Cory Sedlmayr, Caron (Adam) Malin, Brian (Amanda) Maas, Laurie Maas, Amanda Maas and Benjamin Maas; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center Chapel, with Chaplain Linda Kuehl officiating, followed by a private burial in Riverside Cemetery, Stoddard. Friends and family may call from 2:30 p.m. until the time of services Wednesday at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the Maas family. Robert’s family would like to thank the friends at Hungry Peddler and Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center for your love and concern.
