Elizabeth ‘Liz’ M. Pischke

WEST SALEM — Elizabeth “Liz” M. Pischke, 87, of West Salem died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.

She was born March 6, 1921, in Onalaska to Herman and Louise (Schilling) Rahn. On Aug. 7, 1943, she married William Pischke in Pensacola, Fla., and he preceded her in death on April 14, 2005. Liz enjoyed gardening, golfing and dancing with her husband and friends at Maple Grove Country Club. She also played tennis, belonged to a card club and especially loved being active with her grandchildren. She and her husband looked forward to wintering in Brownsville, Texas, where they also enjoyed fishing together.

Survivors include three sons, Jim (Barb) Pischke of Seattle, and Gary (Veronica) Pischke and Rahn (Judy) Pischke, both of West Salem; seven grandchildren, Gina (Mark) Shander of Seattle, Tom (Doris) Pischke of Bern, Switzerland, Elizabeth (Eric) Montemayor of Austin, Texas, Blake Winters of West Salem, and Kate, Rob and Kelsey Pischke, all of West Salem; two great-granddaughters, Sydney and Keira Shander; one brother-in-law, Henry Heider of West Salem; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Riek and Hazel Heider; and one brother, Ken Rahn.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. at Presbyterian Church of West Salem, 625 W. Franklin St. Pastor Stephanie M. Steiner will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. Friends may call at Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m until the time of services. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Our family would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to everyone who lovingly cared for Elizabeth through her long journey with Alzheimer’s, especially to those at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse, Hearten House, Holmen, and Dr. Thomas Loepfe and staff at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare.

Irene M. Dunlap

WEST SALEM — Irene M. Dunlap, 91, of West Salem died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse.

She was born Sept. 27, 1917, in the town of Onalaska to George and Helen (Hoffman) Bruemmer. Irene grew up in La Crosse and worked at her parents grocery store and restaurant during her early school years.

On Dec. 27, 1938, she married Rex Dunlap in West Salem, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1997. Irene and her husband raised nine children, and during that time, she worked at the West Salem Bakery (now Linda’s Bakery). She came up with the cake doughnut recipe that is still being used today.

After their children were grown, Irene became very involved in crocheting and crafts and also had taught some crocheting classes. She was proud of her family, especially of her six sons who all served in the military. Irene also enjoyed reading and music. She was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in West Salem.

Survivors include nine children, Lloyd Bruemmer of St. Louis, Willard (Audrey) Dunlap of Albuquerque, N.M., Willis (Beverly) Dunlap and Marlin (Sharon) Dunlap, both of Billings, Mont., Sharon (Gary) Weaver of Kenosha, Wis., Betty Bahr of La Crosse, George (Sandra) Dunlap of La Grange-Highlands, Ill., Raymond Dunlap of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jean (Thomas) Godfroy of Watertown, Wis.; 13 grandchildren, Wayne (Diane) Bruemmer, Kristine (Stephen) Wade, Marlo (Phil) Holbrook, Sherrie (Steven) Pryse, Michael (Julia) Seidel, Debra (Bruce) Wigand, Jeffery (Janet) Bahr, Jason (Kelley) Bahr, Johnathon (Amy) Bahr, Eric (Wendy) Dunlap and Todd (Julie) Dunlap; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two grandsons, Timothy and Kenneth Dunlap; one brother, Harold (Ethel) Bruemmer; and one sister, Adeline Bruemmer.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Pastor Joel Stuebs will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be given to Christ Evangelical Lutheran School, West Salem.

Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home of West Salem is in charge of arrangements.

William Q. Jeffers

BLUFFTON, Ind. — William Q. Jeffers, 60, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

He was the son of the late Quentin and Olive Jeffers. He retired from General Motors in 2005. A graduate of West Salem High School in 1966, and a U.S. Army veteran. Member of United Auto Workers.

Surviving is his wife, Karen (Helke) Jeffers of Bluffton; and two daughters, Ann Leyman of Keystone, Ind., and Kristine (Edward) Pharoah of Huntington, Ind.; four brothers, Michael (Connie) Jeffers of Cottage Grove, Wis., James (Susan) Jeffers of West Salem, Charles (Tammy) Jeffers of Bangor and Robert (Suzanne) Jeffers of Mequon, Wis.; four sisters, Kathleen Crawford of Janesville, Wis., Patricia (Scott) Marshall of Holmen, Margaret (Matt) Sanders of Melrose and Judith (Jaime) Gamboa of Franklin, Wis.; six grandchildren; three foreign exchange daughters, Hilke Stromann of Germany, Carly De Jong and Pokey Steen of the Netherlands.

A daughter, Shannon Jeffers, is deceased.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Holy Scripture Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, Ind. (www.holyscripturefw.org). Calling will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Goodwin Memorial Chapel, 3220 E. State Road 124 Bluffton, Ind., and one hour prior to the service at the church. Sidney ‘Sid’ Nesseth

SPARTA — Sidney “Sid” Nesseth of Sparta passed away peacefully with his son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Patti, at his side at Tomah VA Hospital on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008.

Sidney was born July 28, 1933, in West Salem to Peter and Solva (Wekseth) Nesseth.

Sid served in the U.S Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. He worked at La Crosse Rubber Mills for 15 years and then relocated to Gillette, Wyo., where he worked in the oil fields until his retirement. He returned to Wisconsin in 2003 due to ill health, where he resided with his son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Patti, until his death. He married Mary (Liskovec) Ekstrom and they later divorced.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include his two sons, Tom (Patti) Nesseth and John Nesseth; three daughters, Jeanne Betsinger, Mary Jo (Paul) Bruha and Sharon (Hans) Hanson; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Private services will be at a later date.

We would like to thank the Tomah VA Hospice Unit for their wonderful care and support while Sid was there.
