This year’s summer reading program at La Crosse County Library drew 1,197 area children ages preschool through high school at the libraries in Bangor, Campbell, Holmen, Onalaska and West Salem.

The top two schools participating in the program were Bangor Elementary with 17 percent school participation and St. Patrick School in Onalaska with 29 percent participation.

The trophies are awarded to the public and private school with the highest participation in the annual program. Second and third places for public schools went to West Salem Elementary (13 percent) and Holmen’s Sand Lake Elementary (11 percent).

Second and third places for private schools went to St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Bangor (24 percent) and Christ St. John’s School in West Salem (21 percent).

Christ St. John’s school was also the winner of this year’s “Awesome Increase Award” for a significant increase of readers from last year.

Participation certificates by grade were awarded to schools in separate public school and private school categories.
