Owners of property totaling more than 200 acres in the town of Hamilton have petitioned to have the land annexed to West Salem.

Property owners William and Dorrene Heider and Roger and Sara Manke and developer Teddy L. Thompson (WESTSAL LLC) have asked the state Department of Administration to review their proposed annexation of land between Highway 16 and Interstate 90, west of the La Crosse River.

The review is expected to take a few weeks, and until that is through village officials won’t be discussing the matter. “Historically, the Planning Commission doesn't look at annexations until the state gives us their opinion,” said Village Administrator Teresa Schnitzler.

The Onalaska Common Council, however, called a special meeting on Wednesday (after the Coulee News deadline) to discuss a possible challenge to the annexation proposal.
