The West Salem School District is experiencing a shortage of adult crossing guards to escort children across the streets on their way to school.
West Salem Police Chief Charles Ashbeck said the district has three locations where crossing guards are used. One afternoon slot at one site needs filling and backups are needed at all locations for both shifts.
Ashbeck said it is always tough to get and keep crossing guards. “Some people probably think they have to be available for both time slots and that’s not true,” he said.
Retirees generally fill the slots, and they are sometimes not available due to vacationing, doctor appointments and so forth. When younger people try to help, their work schedules are often a problem. Weather is also a factor. “We do ask our guards to stand out in a lot of inclement weather,” Ashbeck said.
The district pays $7 for a full hour each morning and afternoon. However, most shifts involve only about 45 minutes of actual work, Ashbeck said.
The police department provides raincoats and traffic safety vests. Anyone interested in either shift should call Ashbeck at 786-0407.
