HOLMEN — After spending the weekend at home, Holmen Area Fire Chief Doug Schober was back at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison on Monday for treatment from burns suffered when an oxygen tank exploded at the fire station Thursday.

His return to the burn unit was expected when he was discharged late last week, said Holmen Village Board President John Chapman.

Schober was alone at the Holmen fire station, 710 Main St., about 6:45 a.m. Thursday when a tank he was working with exploded from some kind of a spark, according to a department official.

The explosion blew out a window in the fire station and ignated a table, damaging some portable radios and other equipment.

An insurance adjustor visited the station Monday, but the estimated cost of the damage is not yet available, according to a department spokesman.
