West Salem High School’s baseball team was selected the winner of the Sportsmanship Award for the summer baseball tournament for the second time.
The Panthers also received the summer baseball award in 2002 and won the honor in football in 2005. The players’ sportsmanship and competitiveness was evident in a 6-5, extra-inning state tournament quarterfinal loss to Oak Creek, the WIAA said in announcing the award.
In addition, West Salem baseball coach Chuck Ihle was selected by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association as its coach of the year after the Panthers won the Large Division of the Dairyland Conference and qualified for the state quarterfinals.
Ihle coached the Panthers baseball team to its first WIAA state baseball tournament in six years.
West Salem senior center fielder T.J. Holven and Melrose-Mindoro senior pitcher Blake Shepherd were selected to the WBCA All-State first team.
West Salem (19-7) lost its quarterfinal at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point, when Ross Fassbinder’s solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Oak Creek a 6-5 victory.
