Ashley M. McCoy

WEST SALEM — Ashley M. McCoy

Ashley M. McCoy, 17, of West Salem, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on Friday, July 25, 2008.

She was born Oct. 16, 1990, in La Crosse to Douglas and Tina (Servais) McCoy. Ashley was a 2008 graduate of West Salem High School. She was currently employed at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Facility in La Crosse as a certified nursing assistant.

Ashley was wonderful caregiver and was looking forward to attending Virterbo University this fall to pursue a nursing career. She loved animals and flowers, especially daffodils.

Ashley was a fun-loving girl who will be remembered for her smile. She was taken from us too soon and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her parents, Doug and Tina of West Salem; her maternal grandparents, Donald and Marie Servais of La Crosse; her paternal grandparents, Doug McCoy and Carolyn Lunsford of Woodbridge, Va., and Christine Meisenheimer and William George of West Salem; her paternal great-grandmother, Joan McCoy of Sparta; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and her beloved pets, Cooper, Bailey, Puff, Duke, Sassy and Ginger.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 29, at Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon Street, West Salem, beginning at 4 p.m. and concluding with a Time of Sharing at 7:30 p.m. Ashley's parents request that family and friends participate in the Time of Sharing by bringing in a story or poem to be shared in Ashley's memory.

Leatrice C. Marten

WEST SALEM — Leatrice C. Marten, 80, of West Salem died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Onalaska (Wis.) Care Center.

She was born Jan. 19, 1928, in La Crosse to Elmer and Helen (Schroer) Denson. Leatrice and her husband, Harry, owned and operated the Marten Roller Rinks for several years. Leatrice later owned the Marten House Boutique in West Salem for 30 years. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in West Salem, where she had been an active member for many years. She was also a member of the West Salem Garden Club, a member and past-president of the West Salem Business Association, and an active member of the American Business Women Association and was named its “Woman of the Year” in 1989.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharyn (Jack) Jordan and Cindy (Mark) Wege, both of West Salem; three grandchildren, Tronda (Mark) Slaback of Holmen, Wis., Shon (Renee) Jordan of La Crosse, and Tait Wege of Arizona; three great-grandchildren, Trevor Valiquette of Holmen, and Lauren Jordan and Shona Jordan, both of La Crosse; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Mallory Slaback of Holmen, Kyle Slaback of Rochester, Minn., and Travis Slaback of La Crosse; one sister, Dorothy Coelin of West Salem; one brother, Eugene “Gene” (Marge) Denson of Texas; one sister-in-law, Virginia Denson of California; four nieces, Pam Walgren, Debi Howardson, Kathy Nontelle and Barbi Denson Lloyd; and seven nephews, Bill Denson, Larry Coelin, Tom Denson, Kim Coelin, David Coelin, Rick Coelin and Randy Coelin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, LaVerne Walgren; second husband, Harry Marten; one brother, LaVerne Denson; and a nephew, Dennis Walgren.

Memorial services will be Friday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 359 N. Leonard St., West Salem. The Rev. Martha J. Hampton will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery, West Salem. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the Franciscan Skemp Hospice Program. Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey P. Abbs

TOMAH, Wis. — Jeffrey P. Abbs, 48, of Tomah died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at his home. He was born Oct. 15, 1959, to Raymond and Mary (Fuerstenberg) Abbs in Tomah. He was united in marriage to Michelle Norman in 1979. He was a member of the Stoughton High School graduating class of 1978. Jeff enjoyed the outdoors and especially deer hunting. He was an avid Packers and NASCAR fan. His true passion in life was spending time with his grandchildren. He was a loving and devoted Papa and took great pride in teaching them their ABCs and 123s.

He is survived by a daughter, Kim Abbs (friend John Davis) of Tomah; a son, Brian Abbs (Nicole Neumann) of West Salem, Wis.; 12 grandchildren, Breanna, Keira, Triton, Maura, Tanner, McKenna, Cody, Becca, Jacob, Brandon, Wyatt and soon-to-be baby Abbs; his mother, Mary of Tomah; a sister, Pamela Zimmerman-Waters of Tomah; a foster sister, Rhonda Presnoll of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; an aunt, Helen (Ray) Salzman of Warrens, Wis.; three uncles, Jerry (Sharon) Fuerstenberg of Millston,Wis., Bill (Carolyn) Fuerstenberg of Janensville, Wis., and Richard (Audrey) Abbs of Tomah; a special niece and nephew, Nikki and Richard VanHoof; other nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray in 1985; and a brother, Lester in 1976.

A Christian Prayer Service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah. The Very Rev. Steven J. Kachel will officiate. A private family burial will be held.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 11 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services at Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home.

Arlan E. Newburg

MADISON/BANGOR — Arlan E. “Chub” Newburg, 76, of Madison and formerly of Bangor and La Crosse died Sunday, July 27, 2008, at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.

He was born June 29, 1932, in Bangor to Elmer and Agnes (Kneifl) Newburg. Arlan was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during the Korean War. On April 21, 1956, he married Delores Schroeder at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse. Arlan was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bangor, the Anderson-Good American Legion Post 40 of Bangor, the Bangor Rod & Gun Club, and the Bangor VFW Post 8278, where he was past-commander. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and attending his grandchildren’s sports and school activities.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Delores; four children, Mark (Wendy) Newburg of Madison, Dr. Julie (Pat Bralick) Newburg of Pueblo, Colo., Michael (Sue) Newburg of Maple Grove, Minn., and Kent (Stephanie) Newburg of Farmington, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Cory, Alex, Alyssa, Mitchell, Nicholas, Kyra and Danica; one sister, Joyce Michaels of Kenosha, Wis.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gerhard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 303 16th Ave. S., Bangor. The Rev. Bob Hegenbarth will officiate. Following the service, military honors will be performed by the Bangor American Legion Post 40 and the U.S. Military Funeral Honors Program. Burial will be held at a later date in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. The family will be making donations in Arlan’s memory to various sports organizations. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, please designate your memorial to any of the following sports choices: football, baseball, basketball, hockey, lacrosse or soccer. Jandt Funeral Home, Bangor, is in charge of arrangements.

Ross E. Scheppa

ROCKLAND / ROCHESTER, Minn. — Ross E. Scheppa, 35, of Rockland and formerly of Rochester died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at his home after a long and very courageous battle with cancer. He was born on June 4, 1973, in Sparta, Wis., to Richard and Carole (Bicknell) Scheppa. He graduated from Sparta High School in 1992. Ross attended WWTC in La Crosse and received his associates degree in restaurant and food service management in 1994. He also attended St. Paul College, enrolling in the dietary manager’s program in 2004.

Ross worked in numerous food service facilities. He started his food service through HERO Club in high school, which employed him at St. Mary’s Hospital in Sparta. His last current job was in Coon Rapids, Minn., at Epithany Assisted Living Center, where he was dietary manager of the kitchen. He also cooked every Wednesday night at Faith Lutheran Church for family night, which he really enjoyed. He was also a member of the County Youth Program in Coon Rapids to help people with special needs make the transition into employment.

Ross loved fishing, camping and model railroading. He was the youngest member at the age of 12 to join the West Central Model Railroad Club in Sparta and was very active in it again when he returned to this area. Ross will be truly missed by his family and friends.

Ross is survived by his father, Richard Scheppa of Kendall, Wis.; his mother, Carole (David) Helgesen of Rockland; a sister, Laura Scheppa of La Crosse; stepbrother, Jeff (Jana) Helgesen of Coon Valley, Wis.; two nephews, Griffin and Sawyer Helgesen; maternal grandfather, Paul L. Bicknell of Richland Center, Wis.; stepgrandmother, Bernice Helgesen of Sparta; aunts and uncles, David Scheppa of Camp Douglas, Wis., Earl (Lynn) Bicknell of Nevada, Vernon (Marleen) Bicknell of Arizona, Barbara Haas of Sparta, Paul (Trish) Bicknell of Richland Center, Glen (Lequeta) Bicknell of Baraboo, Wis., and Jeff (Jeanne) Bicknell of Baraboo; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ed and Marita Scheppa; maternal grandmother, Irene Bicknell; stepgrandfather, George Helgesen; and an uncle, Wilbert Haas.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethany Evangelical Free Church, La Crosse, with the Rev. Dave Hammond and Worship Pastor Greg Childress officiating. Burial will be in Leon Cemetery, Leon, Wis.

Family and friends are invited to call at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of services. Online condolences may be offered at www.lanham-miller.com.
