Acting upon the recommendation of the recreation committee, the Bangor Village Board approved the appointment of Scott Solberg as the village’s new recreation director.

Solberg, who lives in Rockland, agreed to take the position after the previous director, Amy Doubek, unexpectedly resigned early last month. In the interim, former Bangor football coach Kevin Kravik was filling the position.

“The basic reason I did this was for the kids,” said Solberg.

“I decided to do it because I grew up in the area and participated in the rec program. It was a good thing for me. I realize that I’ll be spending a lot more time on this than I’ll ever get paid for, but I know its worthwhile.”

Solberg works at Coulee Region Enterprises in Bangor and has a 9-year-old son who is playing in the baseball program this summer. He also has an 8-year-old and a 4-year-old.

It is hoped that the fact that Solberg is a local resident will add some stability to the program.

“It’s also a good thing that he has kids who will be going through the program,” said village trustee Randy Cook.

Solberg said that he’s still learning what the job entails at this point.

“Everything is kind of up in the air right now. I’m kind of working my way through things and getting my bearings,” he said. “We’ve got a big baseball tournament coming up. After that I’ll talk with Kevin (Kravik) and get a better idea of what needs to be done.”

Solberg will be paid $2,900 a year. His official start date was July 8.
