Dangerous heat index on tap today; rain drenches area

This morning's heavy rains likely will give way to hot and humid air moving up from the south on swift winds that could result in potentially dangerous heat indices for the La Crosse area today.

The high is expected to top out around 90 degrees, while dew points will climb into the 70s, making it fel like 95 to 100, according to the National Weather Service.

Sun stroke, cramps and heat exhaustion are possible with prolonged exposure to heat indices in that range.

This morning's thunderstorms brought heavy rain and left some areas, including along North Star Drive near Holmen Plaza in Holmen, with street flooding.

More storms are possible tonight as a cold front moves through.
