HOLMEN, Wis. — An investigation has begun into complaints the Holmen Village Board violated the state’s open meetings law in handling the sale of part of land known as Star Hill to the local Lions Club.

The board voted in May to sell the hilltop site that has a large, illuminated star and cross to the Holmen Lions for $600.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation contends the board failed to take public input, in violation of the open meetings law, and has asked

La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke to investigate and decide if criminal charges are warranted.

Gruenke said Monday he received the group’s letter July 1 and started an investigation late last week.

“I can’t say a lot about it except to say I’m investigating it,” Gruenke said Monday. “I hope to have something on it this week, but it depends on how long it takes.”

Gruenke said such complaints, while not common, have surfaced before.

The Onalaska City Council in 2002 was convicted of violating the open meetings law for using improperly vague agendas that did not specify the issues to be discussed in closed sessions.

The city then was required to host a workshop for other municipalities on the open meetings law.

" The Fascist-like brown-shirts from the "Freedom From Religion" Foundation seem to be hell-bent on eliminating public opinion, bypassing democracy, and ignoring local opinion by pushing this issue further.

Holmen must put a its'collective foot down now.

The ultra-wacko, fringe groups of the "democratic" party must be dealt with--in this issue--via the constitution and the rights and opinions of the local citizenry.

The FFR Foundation wants to ignore Holmen's collective "comfort level" with the star's presence via political pressure that refuses to give any creedence to the opinions and beliefs of Holmen's religious community.

It is the FFR Foundation that is being hypocritical by refusing to be "sensitive" to the Christian community in Holmen. And that is a major contradiction to the Democrats idea of a "rainbow" and "all-inclusiveness" and DIVERSITY!??

It is in the best interests of Holmen (Western Wisconsin, the midwest, and America) to allow, what Martin Luther King's dream to continue to LIVE;that is, to "...let freedom ring".

Let freedom of public opinion of the Holmen people to ring loud and clear in order to squelch the hateful hypocrits of the FFR Foundation. "

" I don't think so. Why weren't they aware of what happened in the meetings? I am not even a resident, and I know what happened. Why don't they? It's only been all over the local news since this whole thing started. Also, speaking of the FFRF, I still have had no response from them regarding the taxpayer funded Muslim school in Inver Grove Heights, MN that has required Muslim prayer every Friday. Any guesses why that may be? It's only been about 3 months now-they were on this case right away. Could it be that they are only anti-Christian as opposed to anti-religion? "
