West Point grad has Bangor ties Cadet Ryan Alan Mashek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Mashack of Elkhorn and grandson of Arnold and Madonna Hundt of Middle Ridge, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on May 31. Mashek is a 2004 graduate of Elkhorn Area High School. His father taught in Bangor before the family moved to Elkhorn and his mother Jean is from Bangor. While at West Point, Mashek concentrated his studies in international and strategic history and graduated with honors. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the armor branch. After further training Mashek will join the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Germany. Man dies in farm rollover A man was killed June 20 in the town of Washington after his tractor overturned, pinning him beneath it. Raymond W. Korn, 79, was pulling a hay baler and partially loaded wagon along Ray Korn Road south of Highway H in eastern La Crosse County when the tractor veered from the road and overturned at about 3:30 p.m. A sheriff’s deputy patrolling the area discovered the overturned tractor, and the deputy and family members used another tractor to free him, but Korn was pronounced dead at the scene. Jazz concerts set for Riverside Park The Great River Big Band will fill La Crosse’s Riverside Park with the sound of jazz once again this summer. The La Crosse-based band will give four performances as part of the Gertrude Salzer Gordon Jazz in the Park series, along with a traditional Fourth of July performance. They’ll close out the summer series with a “Riverside Jazz Party” featuring popular regional groups, the Air National Guard Band of the Midwest, and trumpet virtuoso and actor-singer Byron Stripling. Remaining concerts in the 2008 series, held in the park’s bandshell, include: Admission to the concerts is free; donations will be accepted.
