The Coulee Region Humane Society will debut a new schedule for its fourth annual adoptathon.

Executive Director Heather Schmid said the Onalaska shelter will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 28 and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 29 to attract more potential families rather than the straight 24 hours it had been open in the past.

“Our goal really is to raise awareness of animals in search of housing,” Schmid said. “I believe these hours will draw more people.”

Schmid said a limited number of people came to apply for animals during the overnight hours during past adoptathons, which prompted the committee to revise the schedule.

The goal is to adopt 22 animals during the two-day event, Schmid said. There are more than 70 currently available.

“We can do that with help from the community,” she said.

This year’s event will offer a Hawaiian luau theme. Among the activities planned are:

  • An art contest for children 17 and younger. Entries of your favorite family pet or animal in any medium are due by 7 p.m. June 26 at the Coulee Region Humane Society. Artwork will be displayed from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 28.

  • A Hawaiian costume contest for those visiting the CRHS June 29 in their luau or Hawaiian-theme clothes. Photos will be taken, and a winner will be selected.

  • The first-ever Aloha Dog Bowl at 10 a.m. June 29 for owners and their best canine friend. There will be skill competitions for prizes. Registration is required by 5 p.m. June 27.

  • Raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win four indoor club seats and a parking pass to the Aug. 11 Bishop’s Charities Game with the Green Bay Packers game. Raffle tickets cost $5 each or five for $20.
