Concentrate on adult stem-cell research

Human life begins at conception and continues through the embryonic and fetal stages, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. We were all embryos once.

The preamble to our Declaration of Independence states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Note the source of these human rights. These rights do not ultimately come from “this-worldly principles of proper political interaction rooted in man’s rational nature” as your guest’s view from Ayn Rand Institute states (July 21 edition). These rights come ultimately from man’s Creator.

Not, too, the order of these rights: life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. One human being’s liberty must not trump another’s life. We are not free to do anything that is possible to do, if our actions take human life. Embryos are human life at an early stage. We are not at liberty to destroy them, even for research.

Let’s push adult stem-cell research. Adult stem cells can be found in almost any part of the human body: skin, fat, bone marrow and a newborn’s cord, blood or placenta. No one has to die to obtain adult stem cells and because the cells come from an individual’s own body, they are not rejected. Adult stem cells can be kept growing almost indefinitely in a culture.

" If other countries DO find cures and scientific proof first, do you think they will simply say, "here you go, we found it, but we'd love to give it to you free of charge"? Of course not. It's going to cost us huge TAX PAYER dollars and send us light years behind. You are probably a Republican, so I would guess that saving tax money is the most important thing for you. "

" What if we do uncover a cure for cancer, AIDS, Parkinson's, etc. by using stem cell research? Isn't it worth exhausting every effort to do so? " You're right. The bottom line is that it is unjust to sacrifice one life for the benefit of another. Embryos by definition are human life at a very early stage of developement. Many people blame our side as being anti-science but in truth science has shown us that even a one celled embryo (right after fertilization) is "self-determining" and has all the genetic resources it needs to develope normally. All it needs is the right environment and proper nurturing. A lot of people (even scientists) try to say that adult stem cells are somehow less valuable. But in fact what most people call their greatest drawback is actually their greatest advantage. Because adult stem cells have differentiated to some extent they can be inserted into a specific tissue without a great risk of tumor formation or rejection. Pluripotent stem cells have been found in abundance in adult stem cells and recent Japanese research shows that adult stem cells can be coaxed into an embryonic like state without destroying a human embryo. Let's put our limited research funds where it will get results and where it will not fund the destruction of innocent human life. "

If I hold that the alleged supernatural source of human rights do not exist, then do those rights themselves not exist consequently? Clearly, your thinking is flawed, and what you've written is rubbish. Embryo's are not individual human beings--they are clumps of human cells, much like the skin cells you shed everyday in the bathroom. "
