Bangor chiropractor buys new machine to help with back pain

When Jack Manzella’s wife Patty had chronic back pain after a tumor was removed from her back almost 15 years ago, he did what he could to help her feel better.

But Manzella, a chiropractor, couldn’t do enough all on his own.

Years later, Manzella started looking into a machine that’s been on the market for only about five years.

Manzella, the chiropractor at Bangor Family Chiropractic, recently spent about $100,000 to buy a DRX 9000, a decompression machine that helps people with herniated discs, facet syndrome, sciatica and degenerative disc disease. It can also help people for whom surgery was unsuccessful.

The machine uses two harnesses to gradually pull at the patient’s back to achieve decompression in the spine. The patient is not supposed to feel any pain from the treatments.

The process takes about 30 minutes.

Manzella charges $4,000 for the 20 treatments over a five- to six-week span. The cost includes exams, a $300 belt the patient is supposed to wear at all times for the first two weeks and ice packs that go on the back after the treatment.

He said his primary reason for getting the machine was to help his wife — who’s feeling better after a few treatments — but he also wanted to help other patients who didn’t find success with a chiropractor, physical therapy or medical interventions.

“It’s for the ones who can’t be helped by anything else,” Manzella said.

The machine, which was successful in 86 percent of clinical studies, brings hope to people with chronic back pain, Manzella said.

“It’s frustrating when you’re not able to help,” Manzella said.

As far as he knows, he’s the only chiropractor in the region to have the machine, and one of only seven in the state.

He said while he recognizes people might consider Bangor too small of a small town to have such a machine in, people from farther away might still travel to the office because of the convenience of Interstate 90.

“I think there’s a population here that can support this kind of thing,” Manzella said.

" Dr. Jack Manzella is an amazing doctor and he does what others cannot. I trust him with my life and if you think chiropractors are quacks you obviously have never been adjusted by a real doctor of chiropractic such as Dr. Manzella! "

" I know someone who utilized the services of Dr. Manzella and his new machine to help with her back. She had excellent results which resolved her back pain and allowed her to avoid surgury--which was being suggested by her medical doc. While I am not a patient of Dr. Manzella, I have heard very good things about him. I met him once; he seems like a good guy. "

" All chiropracters are quacks. Now another gimmick to get people coming in (again and again and again) ad nauseum. "

" The DRX 9000 machine has never been independently tested to confirm the 86% success rate. BEWARE: This is only a very expensive form of traction. "

" Good Afternoon, This was recently brought to my attention and I definitely would like to clarify the above two comments. I am Dr. Jack Manzella's wife who has been treated on the decompression machine in which the article is speaking of. My husband, Dr. Jack Manzella has and is currently practicing in Bangor, Wi. The name of his practice is Bangor Family Chiropractic. Please feel free to give him a call regarding his Chiropractic office and/or questions re: the decompression machine. The number is . . . ( 608 ) 486 -4899. Thank You! Sincerely, Patricia Manzella "

" Sharon- You must have this Bangor mixed up with another Bangor in the country, as the one referred to in this story is in fact just off Interstate 90, and there is a Jack Manzella in Bangor. This is a western Wisconsin newspaper. "

Sharon Clark DC wrote on Mar 16, 2006 8:29 PM:

" This is inaccurate information. There is no Dr. Manzella in Bangor and there is no interstate 90. This is really sad that there is an outright lie being used to promote this product. "
